Duplicate-letter strategy

Coverage early, confirmation later

Opening guesses

A repeated tile tests fewer distinct letters. Five unique letters are therefore a useful opening default when broad elimination matters most.

Yellow and gray copies

One yellow copy confirms at least one occurrence. A separate gray copy can limit the total without erasing the confirmed copy.

Candidate families

When surviving words differ by duplicate count, a repeated guess can separate the family more efficiently than another broad probe.

Exact positions

Two copies in different positions create different feedback patterns. This analyzer lists positions so the repeated structure stays visible.

How counts are calculated

One deterministic letter-count signature

The tool counts the five submitted letters, sorts those counts into a pattern such as 2–1–1–1 or 2–2–1, and compares that signature with every CORE word. Repeated-letter prevalence and comparable examples are calculated locally from the same pinned projection used by the site’s Finder.

Use the Wordle Strategy Guide for decision rules, the Starting Word Analyzer for information gain, or the Wordle Solver once colored feedback is available.

FAQ

Duplicate-letter questions

How does the analyzer find duplicate letters?

It counts each letter in the submitted five-letter word, reports every count above one, and lists the one-based positions where that letter appears.

What is a duplicate-letter pattern?

A pattern describes only the letter-count shape: all unique, one pair, two pairs, a triple, a triple plus a pair, four of a kind, or five of a kind.

Are duplicate letters bad in Wordle?

Not automatically. They reduce distinct-letter coverage in an opener, but they become valuable when the remaining candidate family makes multiple copies likely.

What are comparable CORE words?

They are verified CORE examples with the same letter-count shape as the submitted word, ordered by the existing coarse familiarity band and then spelling.

Is this an official Wordle or Scrabble word checker?

No. It uses the site’s verified word data and does not claim official Wordle-answer or tournament-dictionary status.
